The Kargil Campus of the University of Ladakh successfully hosted a comprehensive five-day Innovation, Design, and Entrepreneurship (IDE) Bootcamp from May 11th to May 15th, 2026. On the fifth and final day of the bootcamp, Mr. Shujaat Ali, Manager Technology at the Technology Enabling Centre (TEC), University of Ladakh, delivered a highly impactful expert talk titled "Unlocking Innovation: Commercialization, IP, and Funding for Student Startups". His presentation served as a strategic guide to help student entrepreneurs transform raw ideas and research concepts into market-ready, protectable business assets.

During his session, Mr. Shujaat Ali emphasized that modern universities are the primary launchpads for global companies. He outlined the crucial steps required to transition a prototype from campus labs to commercial markets while managing long-term business valuations securely.

Key Pillars of Intellectual Property (IP) Explained

The session provided a clear technical breakdown of how student innovators must build a competitive moat by understanding the four pillars of legal protection:

• ✓ Patents: Protecting new inventions, technical solutions, and distinct processes for up to 20 years.
• ✓ Trademarks: Safeguarding brand identity, logos, slogans, and exclusive names for 10 years (renewable).
• ✓ Copyrights: Shielding creative expressions, digital software code, media, and user manuals.
• ✓ Trade Secrets: Securing proprietary business formulas, internal algorithms, and sensitive technical know-how indefinitely without public exposure.

Additionally, he highlighted the Startup India Advantage, explaining that DPIIT-recognized startups are eligible for an 80% rebate on patent filing fees and can access free facilitation services via the National IP Awareness Mission (NIPAM).

The Funding Ladder & Support Ecosystem

Addressing one of the most vital paths for student founders, the session detailed the structured stages of raising venture capital and accessing institutional resources in India:

• ✓ Stage 1: Bootstrapping (INR 0–5 Lakhs) – Initial self-funding and personal networks.
• ✓ Stage 2: Government Grants (INR 5–25 Lakhs) – Accessing major national schemes including BIRAC, DST, and NIDHI-EIR.
• ✓ Stage 3: Incubators & University Funds (INR 10–50 Lakhs) – Utilizing institutional technology business incubators (TBIs) for seed grants and workspace.
• ✓ Stage 4 & 5: Angel Investors & Venture Capital (INR 25 Lakhs–50 Crore+) – Securing capital from networks like the Indian Angel Network, Sequoia Surge, and Blume Ventures as startups scale up.
